on3 announces expansion to Atlantic Canada

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

We are thrilled to announce our expansion to Atlantic Canada! This summer, we will be opening our doors in our new home of Summerside, Prince Edward Island:

SUMMERSIDE, April 19, 2010 – On Three Communication Design Inc. recently announced the expansion of its operations to Summerside, Prince Edward Island. The marketing company, headquartered in Hamilton, Ontario, is currently exploring office space options in the city, and hopes to open its doors in June 2010.

“The growth and opportunity in Atlantic Canada is what motivated our decision to come to Summerside,” explains Jim McGimpsey, partner at On Three. “We have enjoyed our work on the Island immensely, and it’s time to hang out our shingle and continue to grow our business here.”

Although its Summerside location is new, On Three is no stranger to the Island. “We have been working on marketing initiatives in Summerside for years,” says On Three’s Heather Ciere. “We’ve come to love it here, so opening a Summerside location feels a little bit overdue actually. Once the decision was made we knew it was the right one.”

Ciere and McGimpsey are the minds behind projects like the Summerside commercials that aired during the Canada Games, the “Brick” Health IT business investment campaign, and the Summerside branding initiative that won national acclaim from the Economic Developers Association of Canada. On Three hopes to build on this portfolio with a larger group of clients as a result of their Atlantic Canada expansion.

3 ads we love: Olympic edition

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

There were some fantastic ads during the Olympic Games. Here are three of our favourites. First up – Fantastic animated ad that appeared on the BBC to promote the upcoming Olympics:

And of course, the “Destiny” ad that Nike ran – very powerful:

And I couldn’t find a good embed for this, but if you click the photo you can see the truly excellent Rona ad done by Bos Montreal. The simple tape measure concept shows the diversity of our country’s landscape and the coming together of a nation to put on the Games. Great spot.

on3′s top 10 posts of 2009

Monday, December 21st, 2009

on3 is a marketing and communications agency that specializes in promoting places, not products. This blog has become a place for us to take the best stuff from marketing and advertising and make it relevant to Canadian economic developers.

And 2009 has been QUITE the year for economic developers.

We’ve done our best to chronicle some of the challenges, showcase best practices and to examine what a tough economic climate means for marketing and communication design. Based on traffic, these are our most popular blog posts from 2009. Enjoy!

  1. How the Toronto Star lost my business for good… and what economic development marketers can learn from it.
  2. $75,000 for THAT?
  3. “Quality of life” becoming more important for relocation… but what does the term really mean?
  4. The role of ambassador programs in economic development marketing
  5. Tell the truth in city marketing
  6. Oh General Motors, you didn’t. Wait. You did.
  7. White Paper: Has branding become a dirty word?
  8. Eleven myths of economic development.
  9. Alberta rebrands itself
  10. Alberta branding campaign gets caught in a major blunder.

This blog will keep trying making sense of marketing and communication for economic developers in 2010. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading it as much as we’ve enjoyed writing it.

Oakville approves 10-year ec dev strategy

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

We’re thrilled for our clients in Oakville, Ontario!

After many months of hard work, research and community consultation, Oakville’s Department of Economic Development celebrated the endorsement of the Town’s 10-Year Economic Development Strategy. From the Oakville Beaver newspaper:

Focused around three goals aimed at promoting and retaining business, the passing of the strategy at Monday night’s Planning and Development Council meeting, drew great applause from council and onlookers with some calling it a near historic occasion.

“For the first time we have a really comprehensive and well-positioned strategy for the economic future of this municipality,” said Ward 5 Councillor Jeff Knoll.

… and:

Oakville Chamber of Commerce Chair Aby Alameddine also pointed out that while announcing an economic development strategy is one thing, seeing it through is something completely different.

“Execution not only on the part of the Economic Development Department, but involving all members of Town Council and staff will be the critical factor. We must all be engaged. Oakville is not unique in wanting to attract the businesses described in this plan. Other communities in Ontario and in the northeastern United States are aggressively courting them,” said Alameddine.

The Strategy focuses on the following three goals:

Sneak peak: Summerside Commercial

Friday, July 10th, 2009

We’ve just finished shooting two 30 second spots promoting the City of Summerside, and we are absolutely thrilled with the project.

A little background:

Summerside will be hosting the Canada Games this August and these spots will appear during the national broadcast. Our goal with the spots was to show that Summerside is so much more than a nice place to visit. It is a place where you can pursue ambitious career goals, enjoy safe streets and schools for your family, and rediscover personal balance.

Rather than compete with large urban centres, the goal of these spots was to show what’s missing in a big sprawling city, and why Summerside is the place to rediscover it.

We’ll post the finished product in the next week or so. Hats off to Fenian Films for bringing our creative to life and to our client, Mike Thususka at the City of Summerside for making all the arrangements for shooting in Summerside. We even had him hoisting lights and lugging camera equipment. That’s heart.

on3 proud to present the BIG possibilities of small cities

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

We’ve been remiss in showing off this site as it’s been up for quite some time, but we’ve updated bigpossibilities.ca recently and it’s time to show a little of our work! It’s got a cool horizontal scrolling format and some gorgeous photography by Daniel Banko.

The concept was simple: Working with the City of Summerside, we created a campaign around embracing their small size rather than trying to present themselves on par with big urban centres.

In our view, small means great things: Lower operating costs for business, safe streets and schools, and the opportunity to have more balance in your life. At the same time, we are impressed over and over by the ambition and entrepreneurial spirit of this city of 15,000. It’s quite the combination.

To illustrate the “strength” in small, we used real Summerside kids and statements like “When you’re small, the possibilities are endless”, or “Small means you can be anything you want to be”.

Hey – it’s true of kids right? Why can’t the same be said for a small city?

Google Wave will change how we communicate on the web

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Wow. My mind is officially blown. Google has given the world a sneak peek of Google Wave, which is going to change how we talk to each other on the web. It’s hard to boil it down into a simple explanation, but let’s just say that it mashes instant messaging, email, forums, wikis, SMS, blogs and more together into one simple and intuitive browser-based interface. With each new section of the demo below, I found myself saying “NO WAY” out loud over and over. It is very long, but even just watching the first 20 minutes will give you a taste of what is to come.

If you don’t want to watch the video TechCrunch walks you through the features in this post.

WOW.

One, two…

Friday, March 28th, 2008

When you want to accomplish something with a group of people, it helps to count to three.

Counting to three establishes the cadence and momentum required to move in unison. Without it, we work individually but on three, we work together. We believe that this produces the best results. Every time. Without fail.

Part of working together means getting familiar with each others’ working style, approaches and beliefs. That’s why we started this blog. To give our clients, our partners and our peers some insight into what the people behind On Three Communication Design Inc. are all about.

We’ll use this forum to keep you posted on what we’re up to, but also to talk about some of the things that are important to us, like design, communication and business. We hope you like it.
