New EDAC White Paper for download

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

The days of controlled messages, one-way marketing campaigns and careful spin are over. Although that can be scary for economic development marketers, it can also mean new levels of interaction and measurement that were impossible with traditional marketing methods.

Gone are the days of shot gunning thousands of brochures out into the abyss and wondering if they landed in the recycling box. Now it’s about targeted electronic efforts that tell you exactly whether your communication earned you a “click through” or an “unsubscribe”.

Social media in particular has democratized marketing and communication, providing real-time feedback on your brand and the effectiveness of your latest marketing efforts. If you’ve done a great (or not so great) job in your community, you can be sure you’ll hear about it on Twitter or Facebook. Transparency and personality are applauded in the social realm, and corporate speak and PR spin are harshly punished.

It’s a whole new world out there. This white paper will offer a practical guide to get you started with social media, blogs and email campaigns – the new communication tools for economic developers.

This report was created for EDAC members to use in planning, benchmarking and garnering support for their economic development efforts.

New on3 commercials – “The Piper” and “Time”

Friday, July 31st, 2009

The project:

Produce two 30-second television ads showcasing Summerside, PEI on a national stage during the 2009 Canada Games.

The idea:

The idea was to do something totally different with a place branding commercial. Eschew the sweeping aerial shots and rousing soundtrack and, instead, use the opportunity to tell a story and connect emotionally with the audience.

The results:

Check out the sneak peek below, before it airs on TSN during the 2009 Canada Games. We can’t wait to see how it is received by the residents of Summerside and those from further afield alike.

Oakville approves 10-year ec dev strategy

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

We’re thrilled for our clients in Oakville, Ontario!

After many months of hard work, research and community consultation, Oakville’s Department of Economic Development celebrated the endorsement of the Town’s 10-Year Economic Development Strategy. From the Oakville Beaver newspaper:

Focused around three goals aimed at promoting and retaining business, the passing of the strategy at Monday night’s Planning and Development Council meeting, drew great applause from council and onlookers with some calling it a near historic occasion.

“For the first time we have a really comprehensive and well-positioned strategy for the economic future of this municipality,” said Ward 5 Councillor Jeff Knoll.

… and:

Oakville Chamber of Commerce Chair Aby Alameddine also pointed out that while announcing an economic development strategy is one thing, seeing it through is something completely different.

“Execution not only on the part of the Economic Development Department, but involving all members of Town Council and staff will be the critical factor. We must all be engaged. Oakville is not unique in wanting to attract the businesses described in this plan. Other communities in Ontario and in the northeastern United States are aggressively courting them,” said Alameddine.

The Strategy focuses on the following three goals:

3 Lessons in Writing Great Content

Friday, July 10th, 2009

We believe that good communication design consists of a great concept, strong design and engaging messaging. In the spotlight today is the writing component of this equation. This is a list of our three most popular blog posts on writing:

  1. Less is More  This post challenges you to pick a single, clear and concise message rather than trying to get the most bang for your buck by cramming as much as possible into a single brochure or advertisement.
  2. What Makes a Good Call to Action?  A post examining what makes people click, pick up the phone or take a specific action because of a compelling interaction. It looks at specificity, where to place a CTA on a webpage or email, and how to effectively use images to make your call stand out.
  3. The Value of a 10 Cent Word  This post expands on the following quote from “The Elements of Style”, by Edward Strunk: “Avoid fancy words. Avoid the elaborate, the pretentious, the coy and the cute. Do not be tempted by a twenty-dollar word when there is a ten-center handy, ready and able.”

Enjoy!
